This Literacy Corner webpage has been developed by the National Research Center on English Learning & Achievement (CELA). For many years CELA has been one of the nation’s leading authorities on how children develop literacy and how adults can help them do so. Since 1987, CELA has been part of the University at Albany's School of Education, and much of its research and development has been supported by the U.S. Department of Education. CELA's web page has become a vital resource for teachers, administrators, parents, and policymakers involved in K-12 schooling. It is a site rich with research reports, newsletter articles, policy briefs, and classroom materials.
But we thought that those who work with our youngest children should also have a special place where they could find information they can trust. Information that is based on research but not filled with research terms. Information that can be put to use in childcare or preschool settings immediately. And so we asked the Verizon Foundation and the Charitable Leadership Foundation if they would support our efforts to build such a site. They have, and we are grateful for their support of this Literacy Corner website. We are also grateful to our advisors within the University and the early childhood education community of New York's Capital Region.
