Covered Pictures

Purpose: This is a wonderful activity to help young children learn about reading books.  It also gives them practice attending to important details in stories, encouraging them to be active listeners.  Children will learn to form pictures in their minds, an important skill that helps with greater comprehension.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

  1. Select a good story with colorful pictures.

  2. Cover the picture on the first page and read the page. Stop reading at the end of the page.

  3. Ask children to tell you what the page was about. Then ask children to guess what the picture will show.

  4. Show the picture and talk about it.

  5. Then go to the next page and play "Covered Pictures" again.

Note: Listening to a story for what happens is an important part of enjoying reading.
