Gluep

Purpose:  Children learn a great deal about the world through their senses. This activity will amaze the children and activate their senses. They will be sure to utilize a large vocabulary of descriptive words as they speak about the way that it feels and looks. This is a wonderful way to learn about the sense of touch.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

In one bowl, mix borax and 6 tablespoons of water.  In a separate bowl, mix 1 tablespoon water and 1 tablespoon glue. (For colored gluep, add food coloring to this second mixture.)  Add the borax mixture to the glue mixture, and stir it a few times until a blob forms. Strain the mixture out into your hands, and play with the blob. As you play with it, it becomes less slimy and more like silly putty, but if you let it sit for a while, it flattens out, just like a liquid.

Ask the children to describe how the gluep looks and feels as you and they

Bounce it!  Roll it!  Snap it!  Use your imaginations!  JUST DON'T EAT IT!!!!!

Wash your hands and the children's hands before disposing of properly (see below).

Note:  This activity is not suitable for children too young to understand to not put the gluep in their mouths.

SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WITH CHEMICALS: Although these substances are not considered hazardous, you should treat all chemicals with care and wash your hands and the children's hands after handling.  Do not taste or eat any of the materials in this activity. Do not pour the gluep down the sink. Clean up any spill immediately.
