I Spy

Purpose:  This activity is easy to do anywhere, and so flexible that it should be taught to all parents as a way of productively using time spent in the car.  Children can joyfully practice alphabet and phonic skills, colors, numbers, and many others.

Materials/Advance Preparation: None

Directions:

  1. Look for objects around you and give the other players its first letter and sound. "I spy with my little eye, something beginning with...  't'!"

  2. Children guess what the object is.

  3. If they say "truck" and you are thinking of a "tack" tell them, "yes, that's a "t' word but not the one I'm thinking of."

  4. Model this many times.

  5. After a while you can let children try to come up with objects and be the leader.  Help them with this by having them whisper the word and the letter and sound in your ear.

Notes: You can use this game in many different ways.  For example, if you are working with colors you can say, "I spy something that is white."  If you are working with numbers say, "I spy two of something."  The possibilities are limitless!
