Jack Frost  1

Purpose:  Learning this poem provides a rich language experience for young children.  The language paints a lovely picture of "crystal butterflies" and "golden beams."  Exposure to this kind of expressive language helps children as they eventually develop into storytellers and then story writers themselves.

By Helen Harley Davis

Someone painted pictures on my
            Windowpane last night—
Willow trees with trailing boughs
            And flowers, frosty white,

And lovely crystal butterflies;
            But when the morning sun
Touches them with its golden beams
            They vanish one by one!

Directions:

Improvise hand and body movements such as the snow and painting pictures on the windows.  A particularly effective way to teach children to recite a poem is:

  1. First read the entire poem.
  2. Then ask the children to repeat each line after you.
  3. After doing each line, recite two lines and let them repeat.
  4. Finally, try a whole stanza (one stanza each day).
  5. Make a chart with the words.
