Letter Tubs

Purpose:  This activity will engage all of the children regardless of their skill with the letters.  As they do the activity with their peers they will learn from each other about the letters and their sounds.  For 3-4-year-olds who do not yet know their letters, just playing with the toys and learning their names may be enough.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

    1. Label each tub with a letter in upper and lower case.
    2. Fill each tub with little toys and objects that children will recognize and that start with the letter on the tub's label.
    3. Dump the toys from one container out on the table.
    4. Let the children say the sound that the letter makes and identify each item as they put it back into the tub.
    5. When they get good at it, you can dump out two tubs at a time and let them sort them back out.
