Mystery Game

Purpose:  This activity is a wonderful vocabulary booster; it also helps children utilize clues in order to make accurate guesses.  Being able to use clues is a critical skill for emergent readers, as they will need to make educated guesses about the text of the books that they attempt to read.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

Give clues and let children guess: "It's yellow. We buy it at the grocery store. You throw away the outside and eat the inside."  Add clues until someone guesses "banana."  Or, "She comes to our apartment every day. She usually leaves something. She wears a uniform." Until someone guesses "mail carrier."

Try reading a definition from a child's dictionary and letting them guess the word.

Turn it around. "Is a vehicle a person, a building, or a car?"

Note: Use this activity for fun or for developing vocabulary in a particular area.  Use rich descriptive language.
