Purpose:
These name cards can be
used again and again for a variety of activities. They provide a meaningful
and easy way for children to learn letters, and even patterns of letters, as
they appear in different names.
Materials/Advance Preparation:
- sentence strips in a variety of colors or 2 ½" strips of
colored paper
- photos of the children
- tape or glue stick
- Glue or tape a photo to a sentence strip on
the far left side of the strip and write
the child's name in large letters next to the picture.
Directions:
- Use
these name cards for taking turns, for assigning jobs, for labeling their
cubbies, taking attendance, etc.
- If you can, make several name cards for each child.
- Also, you can put all of the children's names and photos on a chart.
A child's name is a basis for learning more about letters, sounds, words,
and language. Children begin to look at these names and discover that
their name begins with the same letter as another child's or that a word is
hiding inside of their name. Also, children love to use the cards as a
resource for writing letters to each other. They can find each others'
names from the photos at first and later by the letters.
