Purpose:
In addition to the valuable small motor activity afforded by folding and cutting, following step-by-step instructions is a skill that
children need to practice. This activity provides that practice as well as offering an
opportunity to extend the activity to learn about winter and snow.
Materials/Advance Preparation:
- Coffee filters (white basket type)
- Sharp scissors
- Crayon
- Contrasting color construction paper (optional)
- Glue
- Depending on the ages of the children, you may want to do some of the
preliminary steps in advance of working with the children.
Directions:
Either do steps 1-3 or 4 in advance, or demonstrate each step for the
children, depending on their ages and skill levels.
- Fold coffee filter in half.
- Find the center of the folded edge.
- Fold the filter into thirds. It will look like an ice cream cone. The point of the cone will be the center point that you found in #2.
- Draw little shapes along the edges of the cone.
- Assist the children (as needed) in cutting out the shapes.
- Open the filter and you should have a beautiful snowflake.
- Put a few dots of glue on the back of the snowflake and press down onto the construction paper.
