Paper Snow Flakes

Purpose:  In addition to the valuable small motor activity afforded by folding and cutting, following step-by-step instructions is a skill that children need to practice. This activity provides that practice as well as offering an opportunity to extend the activity to learn about winter and snow.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

Either do steps 1-3 or 4 in advance, or demonstrate each step for the children, depending on their ages and skill levels.

  1. Fold coffee filter in half.
  2. Find the center of the folded edge.
  3. Fold the filter into thirds.  It will look like an ice cream cone.  The point of the cone will be the center point that you found in #2.
  4. Draw little shapes along the edges of the cone.
  5. Assist the children (as needed) in cutting out the shapes.
  6. Open the filter and you should have a beautiful snowflake.
  7. Put a few dots of glue on the back of the snowflake and press down onto the construction paper.
