Purpose:
This is a delicious and
fun way to explore the concept of seasonal change. This project is a good one
to do in winter. It provides an opportunity for children to
describe their choices, and for the younger children, to talk about the parts
of the body, the clothes we wear, etc.
Materials/Advance Preparation:
- small sized rice cakes (3 for each child)
- cream cheese
- raisins or small M&M's
- baby carrots
- other edible decorations like licorice laces
- popsicle sticks for spreading cream cheese
- paper plates
Directions:
- Give each child three rice cakes on a paper plate.
- Have
children carefully spread cream cheese on the rice cakes. Let them be as
messy as they wish.
- Encourage
the children to use their own ideas for dressing up their snowpeople. Some
ideas might include licorice belts and scarves, M&M buttons, carrot nose,
raisin eyes. Ask them to describe their choices to each other and to you.
Any choices/designs are OK.
- If the children wish, sing
a song like "Dashing Through the Snow" while making the snowpeople.
Or play it as background music.
- Remember to echo children's descriptions back to them: For example,
"Yes, those M&Ms DO look like buttons."
- Admire their work. Eat
and enjoy.
