Snow Pictures

Purpose: This easy project gives children a way to tell a story as they draw a picture of a snowy scene. Sharing their stories with each other offers an opportunity to learn to speak confidently and clearly in order to communicate a message.  It also helps them develop a sense of story, important to their future reading success.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

  1. Demonstrate for children how they can make snowflakes by making little stars or x’s with an extra line (asterisks).
  2. Discuss what might be in a snow picture (e.g. snow people, trees with snow on them).
  3. Let the children draw their pictures.  Encourage all creativity, even if it isn't "snowy."
  4. Ask them to describe their pictures or tell the stories their pictures represent.  Echo their talk back to them.

Note 1: If you want to save these pictures permanently you will have to spray them with hairspray or other fixative in a well-ventilated space away from children and flames.

Note 2:  Remember that the purpose of this activity is to help children develop a sense of story.  Any time children describe any scene they benefit.
