Snowman Dress-up

Purpose: This activity is great fun for children as they learn to observe and notice changes. Such detailed observation is a skill that we want to develop in children as a foundational skill in science.  Another purpose of this activity is to help children learn body parts, use descriptive terms, and strengthen memory skills. Children with strong oral language learn to read more easily.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

  1. Choose one student to be the "snowman" that you have to dress.  Put scarf, mittens, etc., on the snowman while the other students close their eyes.
  2. Have the children open their eyes.  Ask them to describe the items that you have placed on the "snowman."
  3. Ask children to again close their eyes, and change one clothing item (e.g.. put a different hat on) or take a clothing item away.
  4. Ask the children to uncover their eyes and guess what is different about the snowman.  Make sure they use descriptive and exact language.    Echo the children's observational comments back to them.
  5. Repeat the process once or twice more.

Note 1:   This activity is best done with a small group so that all children can participate and there is little wait time.

Note 2:   This activity could be easily modified for other seasons or themes, for example, a beach party (with appropriate props).
