Purpose: This activity can be used to wake up a sleepy class or
it can serve as as an introduction to a story about tending cows.
Materials/Advance Preparation: None
Wake Up You Sleepyhead
Wake up you sleepyhead and go and get the
cattle.
Wake up you sleepyhead and go and get the
cows.
The cows are lost.
The day is warm.
I think I'll rest,
Until they come home.
Directions:
- Do this activity in a large enough space so that the children can
all lie down without crowding each other. As you recite the verse, model
the actions and have the children follow.
- For first two lines, the jump up and down like an
impatient parent scolding a child.
- For "The cows are lost" line, shade your eyes and
lazily get down on one knee.
- For "The day is warm," wipe your brow and get
down on two knees.
- For "I think I'll rest," put one elbow on the
floor.
- For "Until they come home," put both elbows on the floor and
pretend you are asleep.
- Wait a few seconds, then get up quickly and start again.
- It's fun to leave a longer pause before waking them up each time!
Note: Be sure to avoid reprimanding the children for bumping
into each other. Keep a positive atmosphere.
