Fruit Ice Pops

Purpose: In the warm months what could be better than ice pops that the children have made from fresh fruit? Following directions is important to this activity, but more important is enjoying eating the frozen treats!  Inviting children to describe colors, tastes, and sensations as well as learning about the fruits and seasons provide the language rich part of the activity.

Materials/Advance Preparation:

Directions:

  1. Cut up the strawberries (or other fruit).  Discuss colors, name of the fruit, how it grows, etc.
  2. Place all ingredients in a blender.
  3. Blend quickly so that there are still little chunks of fruit left.  Discuss color and texture of the mixture.
  4. Pour into small paper cups.
  5. Place popsicle sticks into cups (the children can do this part).
  6. Freeze for at least eight hours.
  7. After enjoying the treat, invite the children to describe the look, taste, and feel of the pops.

Note:  This activity would fit well with a visit to the farm or orchard where the fruit came from, either before or after, so that the children can see it growing, and perhaps pick it.
