Pre-K Standards: Guidelines for Teaching and Learning
Developed by a panel of national experts in 2002, Pre-K Standards: Guidelines for Teaching and Learning applies to any pre-K setting - childcare, Head Start, full- or part-time nursery school, preschool, etc. It offers 3 key types of information:
- The principles that guided the development of the standards. For example, "Children are active learners," "Family involvement is necessary."
- Twelve guidelines (e.g., children will gain literacy and language learning) organized into 3 domains - social development, symbol systems (language and math), and the world around them.
- Developmental stages of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds.
The work of the distinguished panel was reviewed by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and underwritten by McGraw-Hill, from which the full document and the executive summary are available.
