Pre-K Standards: Guidelines for Teaching and Learning

Developed by a panel of national experts in 2002, Pre-K Standards: Guidelines for Teaching and Learning applies to any pre-K setting - childcare, Head Start, full- or part-time nursery school, preschool, etc. It offers 3 key types of information:

  1. The principles that guided the development of the standards. For example, "Children are active learners," "Family involvement is necessary."
  2. Twelve guidelines (e.g., children will gain literacy and language learning) organized into 3 domains - social development, symbol systems (language and math), and the world around them.
  3. Developmental stages of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds.

The work of the distinguished panel was reviewed by the Carnegie Corporation of New York and underwritten by McGraw-Hill, from which the full document and the executive summary are available.
