Succeeding against the Odds in English
Judith A. Langer
ABSTRACT
What is it that makes some English programs particularly successful and
others less so? That is the question that guided a research study Langer
conducted at the Center on English Learning & Achievement (CELA). Langer's
research team studied schools that, like so many today, are trying to
improve student performance overall, including performance on high-stakes
tests. They focused on schools in California, Florida, New York, and Texas,
four states with very diverse student populations and different testing
demands.
